Kallikantzaros

There is a Norwegian folktale about the Kallikantzaros. They are evil elves that come out on the Winter Solstice to try and cut down Yggdrasil, the World Tree. In order to keep them from doing so people will put colanders outside, the elves would become distracted by trying to count all of the holes. It would take them all night and before they knew it, dawn would come, and they had to return underground, leaving Yggdrasil still standing.
